About AusPrEP

Austin Pre-freshman Engineering Program (AusPrEP) is one of the Texas Pre-freshman Engineering Programs (TexPrEP) located on college campuses in Texas.   PrEP was founded to identify high achieving middle and high school students with the potential and interest in becoming scientists and engineers and to reinforce them in the pursuit of these fields.  TexPrEP began in 1979 at the University of Texas at San Antonio under the leadership of Dr. Manuel Berriozabal and has been recognized nationally for preparing students for college

engineering and science studies.

AusPrEP will not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, sex, color, age, handicap, or national origin in selecting students for participation nor in the administration of this project.  AusPrEP strongly encourages women and students from minority groups, who have been traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering, to apply for participation.  Middle school students who are currently in grades sixth, seventh, or eighth are encouraged to apply for PREP year one.  Students currently in the fifth grade are encouraged to apply for the Pre-Algebra Institute.

Program and Financial Information can be found below.

Program Information

Applicants should have a B or better average in their academic courses, especially in mathematics.

The program hours are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. daily.

On field trip days hours may vary because of field trips or other activities. All participants are expected to attend daily.

All classes give assignments and examinations.  Participants are expected to do the work required and to maintain a minimum average of 75% in AusPrEP courses. If a first-year student fails to score 75% or better on the first logic examination, the student is subject to dismissal from AusPrEP.  Students who complete the assignments should meet this standard.

Unexcused absences from the program or acts of misconduct may result in immediate dismissal from the program.  Students with three or more excused absences may be asked to leave the program after individual consultations.  Students are expected to abide by HT and AusPrEP rules given by the program staff.

All program functions, except field trips, are held on Huston-Tillotson University Campus.  Program staff is available for supervised research and individual consultations.

Financial Information and Financial Aid

AusPrEP will not be charging a fee for attendance in the progam this year, 2009.
